{"id":42,"date":"2023-07-22T16:42:53","date_gmt":"2023-07-22T15:42:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/apperleydeerhust.co.uk\/?page_id=42"},"modified":"2025-04-16T11:42:34","modified_gmt":"2025-04-16T10:42:34","slug":"walking-wildlife","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/apperley-deerhurst.co.uk\/?page_id=42","title":{"rendered":"Walking &#038; Wildlife"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WALKING<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">There are numerous walks around the Apperley and Deerhurst area so you are sure<br>to find one which suits your requirements.&nbsp;&nbsp;The footpaths are in the main well marked and<br>well looked after, although some can get a little overgrown in the middle of&nbsp;summer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In Apperley, the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/apperley-deerhurst.co.uk\/?page_id=75\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"75\"><u>village hall<\/u><\/a> car park offers a good starting&nbsp; place for many walks.&nbsp; You can walk along well marked footpaths to Deerhurst &#8211;&nbsp; there are various paths to choose from so you don&#8217;t have to return along your&nbsp;outbound route. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">At Deerhurst, you can park your car by&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/apperley-deerhurst.co.uk\/?page_id=4523\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"4523\"><u>Odda&#8217;s Chapel&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>(English&nbsp;Heritage).&nbsp; There is a small car parking charge.&nbsp; From here you can walk the short distance across fields to the River Severn, along the river bank towards&nbsp;Apperley or in the opposite direction towards Tewkesbury.&nbsp; It is&nbsp;also only a short walk from this car park to <a href=\"http:\/\/apperley-deerhurst.co.uk\/?page_id=4971\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"4971\">Deerhurst Church<\/a>, always well worth&nbsp;a visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Apperley Footpmailto:ath Group helps to maintain the footpaths in the parish and can be contacted by emailing <a href=\"mailto:apperleyfootpathgroup@gmail.com\" data-type=\"mailto\" data-id=\"mailto:apperleyfootpathgroup@gmail.com\">apperleyfootpathgroup@gmail.com<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>For details of&nbsp;walking routes with maps and pictures to help you find your way&nbsp;see our<br>&nbsp;Suggested Walks page<\/strong><\/em><strong><em>. (Please note this page is temporarily unavailable pending update to new Ordnance Survey software) <br>You can also visit the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/walkinginengland.co.uk\/glos\" target=\"_blank\">Walking in Gloucestershire&nbsp;website<\/a>.&nbsp; for detail of hundreds of FREE walks throughout the county.<\/em><\/strong><br><strong><em>On their site you can download and print the walks plus details of all the walking clubs in the county plus maps and books<br>&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Heritage Apple Trail<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Heritage Apple Trail runs from Deerhurst Priory to Cooks Green, Lower<br>Apperley.&nbsp; You can join the trail wherever you want as most of the trees are<br>next to footpaths.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; To find out more about the heritage apple trail&nbsp; and&nbsp; the varieties please visit&nbsp;the<a href=\"http:\/\/apperleydeerhurstheritagealive.weebly.com\/apple-trail.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Apperleydeerhurstheritagealive website&#8230;&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WILDLIFE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In the south and south east of the parish there are footpaths leading from Lower<br>Apperley to the Coombe Hill Canal &amp; Meadows, a Gloucestershire Wildlife<br>Trust nature reserve.&nbsp; Coombe Hill Canal and Meadows is&nbsp; an SSSI, a place of floods and farming, an ancient landscape fringing the&nbsp; Severn. It is a very special site for wetland birds,&nbsp; particularly waders and&nbsp; migrating waterfowl but here you can also see birds of&nbsp; prey, including hen&nbsp; harrier, peregrine falcon and goshawk.&nbsp; Coombe&nbsp; Hill is an ideal place to revel<br>in the peaceful serenity of the countryside;&nbsp; bring binoculars to bird watch, or&nbsp;simply enjoy the wildlife and scenery on&nbsp; offer.
