{"id":5012,"date":"2023-08-01T22:14:56","date_gmt":"2023-08-01T21:14:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/apperleydeerhust.co.uk\/?page_id=5012"},"modified":"2023-10-25T22:00:45","modified_gmt":"2023-10-25T21:00:45","slug":"st-alphege-of-deerhurst","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/apperley-deerhurst.co.uk\/?page_id=5012","title":{"rendered":"St. Alphege of Deerhurst"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image alignright uagb-block-d84d9240 wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-right\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/apperley-deerhurst.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/St-alphege-reduced-186x300.jpg \" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 150px\" src=\"https:\/\/apperley-deerhurst.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/St-alphege-reduced-186x300.jpg\" alt=\"Stain glass St Alphege\" class=\"uag-image-4761\" width=\"186\" height=\"300\" title=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Alphege<\/strong>, circa AD 953 to 1012, was a monk at Deerhurst.&nbsp; It is said he found the rule here too lax and moved on to become a hermit at Weston near Bath.&nbsp; He became Abbot of Bath and then Bishop of Winchester before becoming Archbishop of Canterbury.&nbsp; He was killed by soldiers of the invading Danish army on 19th April 1012 at Greenwich.&nbsp; Thomas Beckett, in his last sermon, referred to Alphege as the first Martyr of Canterbury.&nbsp;He is thought to be featured in the stain glass window in the Priory Church shown here.<br><br>In 2012 a programme of events took place throughout the year to celebrate the Millennium of St. Alphege, including a visit by the Archbishop of Canterbury in July.&nbsp; He&nbsp; preached in a special service&nbsp;at&nbsp;Deerhurst, where he also&nbsp; dedicated a new altar of St Alphege.
