George Butterworth, 1822-1909<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\">George Butterworth was the Vicar of Deerhurst from 1856 to 1893. He was born at Clapham Common in London in 1822. Described as a \u201cscholarly man\u201d as well as a \u201cdedicated clergyman\u201d, he moved into the parish with his wife when he secured the appointment of vicar.\u00a0 His wife\u2019s father was Bishop Kaye, Bishop of Lincoln.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"215\" height=\"255\" src=\"http:\/\/apperleydeerhust.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/George-Butterworth-portrait-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5348\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><strong>George Butterworth discovered Odda&#8217;s Chapel<br><\/strong>Butterworth had always suspected, from the great thickness of its walls, that the central portion of Abbots Court was very old, but had not discovered anything to indicate its age.  In 1885 when work was being carried out on the building, Revd Butterworth took a look inside and he noticed a faint semi-circle under the plaster covering the front wall.\u00a0 He removed some of this covering and exposed the remains of a round headed doorway.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"745\" height=\"344\" src=\"http:\/\/apperleydeerhust.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Oddas-Chapel-closer-crop-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/apperley-deerhurst.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Oddas-Chapel-closer-crop-1.jpg 745w, https:\/\/apperley-deerhurst.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Oddas-Chapel-closer-crop-1-300x139.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 745px) 100vw, 745px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Stone built Odda&#8217;s Chapel (left) &amp; half timbered Abbots Court, Deerhurst<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\">Gradually, Revd Butterworth and builder Thomas Collins revealed a Saxon chapel.\u00a0 The walls of the chapel had been plastered, covering the windows.\u00a0 When the restoration was complete the chapel was found to consist of a nave and chancel of a total length of 46ft, divided by an 11th century arch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em>George Butterworth wrote the first edition of his book \u201cDeerhurst.\u00a0 A Parish in the Vale of Gloucester\u201d in 1887, after he had lived and worked in the village for over 30 years.\u00a0 Much of the book concerns the history of the priory church, but he also discusses at some length the other major buildings and important families of the parish, folklore, customs and flora and fauna. The book was the result of a great deal of historical research and personal observation, and illustrated Butterworth\u2019s love and care for the priory church and for its fascinating historical background, and for the history and folklore of the whole parish.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile has-medium-font-size\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 26%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Revd George Butterworth died in 1909.\u00a0 His grave is in\u00a0 Deerhurst Churchyard<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"88\" height=\"130\" src=\"http:\/\/apperleydeerhust.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/GB-grave.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5350 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><br>Sir Alexander Butterworth, one of Revd George Butterworth\u2019s sons, became a solicitor and later General Manager of the North Eastern Railway, based at York.\u00a0His son George Sainton Kaye Butterworth (born 1885) was a talented composer,\u00a0writing \u00a0three orchestral works\u00a0<em>Two English Idylls<\/em>\u00a0(1911),\u00a0<em>A Shropshire Lad<\/em>\u00a0(1912) and\u00a0<em>Banks of Green Willow<\/em>\u00a0(1913),\u00a0as well as songs and choral music and several arrangements of Morris dance tunes.\u00a0 In World War 1 he won the Military Cross for his defence of a trench which was subsequently named after him.\u00a0 He was killed\u00a0 by a sniper\u2019s bullet during the Battle of the Somme in 1916.\u00a0 His memorial is at Thiepval.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"584\" height=\"567\" src=\"http:\/\/apperleydeerhust.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Butterworth-memorial-in-priory.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/apperley-deerhurst.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Butterworth-memorial-in-priory.jpg 584w, https:\/\/apperley-deerhurst.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Butterworth-memorial-in-priory-300x291.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Revd.
