{"id":5366,"date":"2023-08-24T12:15:59","date_gmt":"2023-08-24T11:15:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/apperleydeerhust.co.uk\/?page_id=5366"},"modified":"2023-08-24T12:34:04","modified_gmt":"2023-08-24T11:34:04","slug":"a-few-prominent-people-3","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/apperley-deerhurst.co.uk\/?page_id=5366","title":{"rendered":"A Few Prominent People:"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Alf Dipper, Gloucestershire &amp; England Cricketer, 1885-1945.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\">Alfred Ernest Dipper was born at Green Farm in Apperley on 9th November 1885.\u00a0 One of ten children, he was educated first at Deerhurst School and then at Tewkesbury Grammar School.\u00a0 Alf learned his cricket at Apperley Cricket Club, later moving on to Tewkesbury Cricket Club where his talent was spotted and he was chosen to play his first cricket match for Gloucestershire against Kent in 1908.\u00a0 He turned professional, aged 23, in 1908 although it wasn\u2019t until 1911 that he could really command a place with Gloucestershire.\u00a0 For many seasons Dipper was the sheet anchor of the Gloucestershire side.\u00a0 His only Test appearance was in 1921 at Lord\u2019s against Australia.\u00a0 He scored 11 and 40.\u00a0 He played his last game for Gloucestershire in 1932 against Somerset at Bath.\u00a0 On his retirement from the first class game he became an umpire.\u00a0 He died in London in 1945.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"397\" height=\"618\" src=\"http:\/\/apperleydeerhust.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Alf-Dipper.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5371\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\">Alf came from a long established local\u00a0family who had been farmers in Apperley and Tirley for several generations. He grew up at Green Farm, in the heart of Apperley.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"439\" height=\"301\" src=\"http:\/\/apperleydeerhust.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Green-Farm.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5372\" srcset=\"https:\/\/apperley-deerhurst.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Green-Farm.jpg 439w, https:\/\/apperley-deerhurst.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Green-Farm-300x206.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 439px) 100vw, 439px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Green Farm, Apperley<\/strong>, <strong>where Alf Dipper grew up<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\">Dipper wrote a book called &#8220;Cricket Hints&#8221; which contains some interesting reflections on the game and on his cricketing experiences, including his days as a young cricketer at Apperley.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"301\" height=\"389\" src=\"http:\/\/apperleydeerhust.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Cricket-Hints-book-cover.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/apperley-deerhurst.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Cricket-Hints-book-cover.jpg 301w, https:\/\/apperley-deerhurst.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Cricket-Hints-book-cover-232x300.jpg 232w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 301px) 100vw, 301px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;<em><em>Whether I was a cricketer born or not, modesty forbids me to say, but Apperley near Tewkesbury is after all, in the county of the Graces, and my home was within a stone\u2019s throw of the village pitch.\u00a0 Small wonder then, that my earliest recollections of things finite centre round the cricket field.\u00a0 On the further side played the seniors, the giants of the game, and we, the little boys looked upon them with awe what time we piled our coats for stumps and tucked up our meagre shirt sleeves over our equally meagre arms.<\/em><\/em>&#8220;<br><em>\u201cOne of my earliest privileges was helping to carry the club bag some four or five miles to the ground where a match was to be held.\u00a0 If one of the team happened to be away I was rewarded for my pains by being allowed to play.\u00a0 I have an unwilling suspicion, however, that the reward was not altogether one sided, seeing the inordinate amount of fielding that fell to my share on these great occasions.
